This is a white and olive green Beni Ourain rug, hand-knotted in our workshop in Morocco. A clean white field carries two large olive green forms, a wide horizontal rectangle in the upper portion and a taller vertical rectangle below it, the two shapes overlapping slightly at their meeting point. A single rust orange vertical line runs through the center of both forms from top to bottom, cutting through the green with a fine, deliberate mark. The composition is sculptural and painterly, the kind of piece that reads differently depending on the distance from which it is viewed.
This rug sits at the intersection of Amazigh craft tradition and contemporary artistic expression. The two overlapping green forms draw from the Berber practice of dividing the rug field into zones of meaning, each section carrying its own character, the overlap between them reflecting the way communities and landscapes meet and share boundaries.
