This is a black and white Beni Ourain rug, hand-knotted in our workshop in Morocco. Dense black and natural white alternate in a field of vertical stripes that run from top to bottom across the entire surface. In the central and lower portions of the rug the stripes break open into larger free-form shapes, angular and organic negative space that emerges from the stripe rhythm like a pattern within a pattern. The composition shifts as you move across it, structured and rhythmic at the edges and more open and painterly toward the center, the two zones meeting in the middle with real energy.The vertical stripe draws from the rivers and seasonal streams that run down from the Atlas Mountains through the valley floors below, lines of movement and life running through the Berber landscape from one community to the next. The variation in stripe width and rhythm across the field reflects the hand of the weaver, every row a decision made in the moment, no two sections mechanically identical. The free-form geometric shapes that emerge in the central field reflect the Amazigh tradition of embedding architectural detail into the rug field, forms drawn from the carved plasterwork and arched doorways of traditional Berber and medina design. White hand-knotted fringe finishes both ends.
