The composition is rich and deeply textured, a dense field of vertical white stripes running through a warm brown ground across the upper portion of the rug. The stripes break and shift at irregular intervals, some stopping abruptly, others continuing in stepped or curved forms, giving the pattern an organic rhythm that feels woven by instinct rather than formula. In the lower field the vertical lines loosen into softer wavy forms, the pattern breathing out toward the fringe in a gradual, unhurried transition.
The vertical stripe draws from the rivers and seasonal streams that run down from the Atlas Mountains through the valley floors below, lines of movement and life running through the Berber landscape from one community to the next. The variation in line length and rhythm across the field reflects the hand of the weaver, every row a decision made in the moment, no two sections mechanically identical. The shift from structured vertical stripes in the upper field to softer undulating forms below reflects the Amazigh weaving tradition of allowing the composition to evolve as the piece grows on the loom. I rarely leave reviews, esp negative ones, but this was a costly mistake I wish someone had warned me about. I saved for this rug & chose it specifically for the pattern and color shown in the listing. But the rug I received did not match those photos. The design is completely different, the colors are not even close, & it started shedding the moment I unwrapped it - and has continued for weeks (hasn’t stopped!) I tried resolving it with the seller & through Etsy, but neither was willing or able to address the mismatch. I’m now left with a very expensive rug that isn’t the one I thought I was buying & I can’t return it. I’m sharing this because I wish I’d known how different the actual rug could be. If you’re considering this merchant, ask for clear, current photos of the exact rug you’ll receive. And look closely!
