This is a white and black Beni Ourain tufted rug, made by hand in our workshop in Morocco. A wide, clean white field carries a bold composition of black lines placed with architectural precision. A dense column of vertical black lines runs from the upper portion of the rug downward, stopping sharply midfield. From the base of the column, two sets of nested angular lines spread outward to the left and right, stepping outward in concentric L-shaped forms that fan across the lower field. The composition is completely asymmetric, the lines occupying the right half of the rug and leaving the left side open and breathtaking in its restraint.
The vertical lines draw from the rivers and seasonal streams that run down from the Atlas Mountains, lines of movement and life that have defined the Berber landscape for generations. The nested angular forms that spread from the base of the column reflect the Amazigh architectural tradition, the stepped forms of Berber kasbah walls and terraced hillside villages echoed in the lines of the rug. The asymmetric placement of the composition reflects the Amazigh weaving tradition of placing marks where they feel right rather than where symmetry demands, a deeply personal and considered choice. Black and white dot detail finishes the top border, with white hand-knotted fringe at both ends.
