This is a black and white Beni Ourain rug, hand-knotted in our workshop in Morocco. A deep black field carries a dense horizontal texture throughout, the pile woven in alternating black and white threads that give the ground a rich, heathered quality rather than a flat tone. Bold white vertical lines rise from the lower field toward the top of the rug, spreading outward as they climb and tapering to fine points at the top, like tall reeds growing upward from the earth. At the lower edge three large white triangle forms point upward, anchoring the composition with a strong geometric base. Black and white dot detail finishes the fringe border at both ends.
The vertical lines draw from the rivers and seasonal streams that run down from the Atlas Mountains through the valley floors below, lines of movement and life running through the Berber landscape from one community to the next. The way the lines spread and taper as they rise reflects the natural growth of vegetation along those waterways, reeds and grasses widening at the base and reaching upward. The white triangle forms at the lower edge echo the mountain peaks of the Atlas range, a form that has defined the Berber visual landscape for centuries. White hand-knotted fringe finishes both ends.

This rug is seriously beautiful. It has that rich, Moroccan feel—thick, bold, and covered in those classic Berber patterns that make a real statement. The wool is super plush and clearly high-quality, and you can tell it’s authentic and handmade by local artisans. It’s got that deep, textured North African look—kind of rustic, kind of elegant, just really special. Definitely not something you’d find at CB2, West Elm, or Anthropologie. I love that each rug is custom-made, so even though you pick a pattern, it still feels unique. It’s chunkier and thicker than I expected, but honestly, that just makes it feel even more lush and comfortable underfoot. It does take a little time to arrive since it ships straight from Morocco, but it’s absolutely worth it.
