This is a mint green and pink Beni Ourain rug, hand-knotted in our workshop in Morocco. A soft mint green fills the entire field in a deep shaggy pile, crossed by a bold diagonal pink stripe that sweeps from the upper left toward the lower center of the composition. Scattered across the green ground are diamond shapes in olive, yellow, orange, and burgundy, each one distinct in color and placement. On the left side of the field an intricate figurative motif in burgundy, olive, and yellow sits within the composition, detailed and deliberate. A horizontal pink band runs along the lower edge, anchoring the piece with a clean line of color.
This rug sits firmly at the intersection of Amazigh craft tradition and contemporary artistic expression. The diamond forms scattered across the field draw from the mountain peaks of the Atlas range that have defined the Berber visual landscape for centuries, each shape placed freely rather than in a grid, reflecting the Amazigh tradition of personal and spontaneous mark-making within the rug field. The diagonal pink stripe echoes the caravan routes and mountain paths that crossed the Moroccan landscape, lines of movement and connection running through the Berber world. The figurative motif on the left draws from the ancient Tifinagh script and symbolic marks embedded in Berber textiles for generations. White hand-knotted fringe finishes both ends.
